Photojojo's Cell Phone Lenses Mix and Match with Magnets

Smartphones like the iPhone 4 and HTC Droid Incredible can produce surprisingly nice images despite the tiny size of their sensors and lenses, and having a single device in your pocket that can do a little of everything is much more convenient than lugging around multiple dedicated devices. Sure, you can't replace a large sensor, but we don't usually have thousands of dollars to spend or the willingness to lug around several pounds of gear to get the image quality of a full-frame DSLR.

There are plenty of tips and tricks you can use to get the most of your phone's pictures, and Photojojo is adding just a little bit more photo functionality to camera phones by implementing a surprising feature usually only seen on DSLRs and Micro Four Thirds cameras: interchangeable lenses.

The company offers a pair of lenses for use with camera phones, interchangeable thanks to a permanently-affixed magnetic ring. Just stick the ring around the camera's original lens and you can just snap on either accessory lens. The two lenses are a wide-angle macro lens that offers a 0.67x angle over the phone's original lens and can focus as close as 10mm, and a fisheye lens that offers a 180-degree view with the traditional fisheye vignetting. The lenses come off when not in use, leaving only the thin magnetic ring on the phone, and they include caps for both sides of the lenses.

These aren't the first camera phone add-on lenses we've seen, including both retail add-ons and DIY projects made from broken DVD players. However, Photojojo's new lenses are some of the best-designed, with a simple ring that keeps the phone's original profile and lets you use multiple lenses.

They can't replace a large sensor and some high-quality, expensive lenses for photography, but at $40 for both or $20 for the wide-angle and $25 for the fisheye lens, they offer a nice shot of flexibility to your previously fixed-focus camera phone lens.
